Becoming a Cowboy

In order to really say you are living on a farm a cowboy must have a few special things...boots, spurs, belt with large buckle and a hat. SO we made a trip to the city and found just the right stuff for the boys. Hunter hasn't stopped wearing them since! Devin quickly decided that wearing jeans and boots in 103 degree weather wasn't such a great idea ;) Hunter however HAS to wear jeans...NO substitutions allowed! Imagine that!?!?

A big job each night is to let the cows out. The other night I'm sitting out by the pool watching the sunset and I hear from behind "Go on...shew, shew...get on out there!" What do I find when I turn around??? My cowboy Hunter chasing the cows down the lane into the pins. It was hysterical...one minute you see a cow walking down the lane...five seconds later you see a little cowboy running full speed behind shewing them on. The cow runs into the pin and my cowboy runs back to the barn to start again. Mind you this isn't a short run back and forth! This goes on for about 30 minutes or so. He has quickly learned how to get the cows into the right pins and lock them up. What a sight! I will take video of it soon but below are some pictures.

Devin has really taken with the pigs. He enjoys walking them and watering them each day. He is REALLY excited about getting his baby goat!! He planted pumpkin seeds in the garden and checks on them each day to be sure they're growing. He plans to sell them this Fall at Nini's shop.

One thing that I enjoy each night are the AMAZING sunsets!

  1. So much fun! I don't understand why the cows are put out at night. Where are they during the day? So they go into a pen at night, not a barn? I have no idea about cows. Believe it or not, I've never had cows! If you know me you know I've had so many different types of pets.
Take care and please keep the stories coming!
    Love,
    Chris

  2. Chris, I too am learning all about this. These are their show cows and I guess you could say they are living the good life. They spend the day in a cooler room so they don't get too hot and are let out at night when it's cooler to eat. They are brought in each morning after the sun comes up. I'm sure there's a whole lot more to it than that but that's all I know for now :)

  4. Ah-h! The days of my youth. Fond memories of going up the hill to a pasture and shooing the cows down to the barn to be milked. This was a farm that I could ride my bicyle to after school and then be bak home for supper. Enjoying your blogs and photos. Love, G. :)
